BS5837 Compliance and Why

BS 5837:2012 is a British Standard that provides recommendations and guidance for managing, protecting, and planting trees in relation to construction and structures. Here are the key points:

What Does the Brittish Standard Consist of?

  1. Scope:

    • BS 5837 addresses the harmonious coexistence of trees and construction activities.

    • It covers aspects such as tree surveys, protection zones, and design considerations.

  2. Tree Constraints Plan (TCP):

    • A TCP identifies existing trees on a development site.

    • It assesses their impact on the proposed development and helps plan around them.

  3. Root Protection Zone (RPZ):

    • RPZs are mapped around retained trees.

    • Protecting roots during construction ensures tree health and stability.

  4. Arboricultural Implications Assessment (AIA):

    • An AIA evaluates the impact of development on trees.

    • It informs decisions about tree retention, removal, or replacement.

  5. Tree Protection Plan (TPP):

    • A TPP outlines measures to safeguard trees during construction.

    • It includes protective barriers, ground protection, and guidelines for avoiding damage.

  6. Design Considerations for New Planting:

    • BS 5837 advises on selecting appropriate tree species and locations.

    • It ensures new planting integrates well with existing structures.

  7. Post-Development Management:

    • Maintenance and care after construction are crucial.

    • Proper management sustains healthy trees and prevents conflicts.

In summary, BS 5837 promotes responsible tree management within construction projects, benefiting both the environment and built structures.

Who Needs to Adhere to it?

The BS5837 survey is essential for anyone planning changes to property or land near trees. It applies to large development companies (like residential developers) and individual homeowners. These surveys ensure harmony between construction and nature, safeguarding both property value and safety.

Is It Expensive?

The cost of a BS5837 tree survey can vary depending on factors such as the size of the site, the number of trees, and the location. However, approximate starting prices for a standard BS5837 Tree Survey range from approximately £300 to £1000 and up, (on the basis of up to10 trees), depending on how many trees, complexity of the site, urgency of the completed report and which components of the report the local authority require.
